Raccoons-2Raccoons are generally associated with streams, rivers and the beach.  However, in certain circumstances they will invade homes for shelter or to give birth.  Female raccoons normally give birth in the spring, but may give birth at other times.  If chirping sounds are heard in an attic or crawlspace, this may indicate the presence of baby raccoons.  Raccoons may leave claw marks along a soffit or fascia when entering a structure.  Paw prints on downspouts of gutters can indicate the presence of raccoons.  Raccoons may also access rooftops from overhanging vegetation.

Raccoons have become extremely comfortable around humans.  They will readily feed on pet foods left for domestic animals.  This makes raccoons dangerous to pets as they are susceptible to rabies and distemper, common fatal diseases in both cats and dogs.  Raccoons may also carry parasites which are deadly to pets.  Do not feed pets outdoors, as this may allow pets to come into contact with sick raccoons.  Household garbage should be kept in an appropriate container so as not to attract raccoons.  If a raccoon is seen in the day time it may be a result of high population density or the animal may be sick.  If you see a raccoon behaving strangely, call us immediately as we are a 24 hour service.  All other raccoon problems will be handled as follows:

  • Trapping – Raccoons should be live trapped in residential areas as other traps may be dangerous to pets.  Our knowledgeable biologists understand safe raccoon removal and are concerned about the health of other species and domestic animals.  Captured raccoons are not released, as they can spread many diseases to wildlife and domestic animals.
  • Sanitary Cleanup – Raccoons are large animals and as omnivores feed on many things.  Raccoon excrement is large and can build up quickly on insulation and can even stain ceilings.  The area will be effectively treated and cleaned by our licensed pest control applicators (South Carolina Pesticide Regulatory Commission).
  • Exclusions/Repair – All areas deemed points of entry as well as all damages caused by the raccoons to siding, fascia, electrical wiring, insulation contamination and/or openings allowing future access to the structure will be modified or repaired by our licensed building contractors (SCLLR).
  • Habitat Modifications – Any vegetation that appears to provide easy access to a roof line or walls will be cosmetically trimmed by skilled arborists from our tree division (Tree MD) to prevent the structure from allowing easy access to the roof or ledge.  In some cases a tree may be removed by directive of the home owner.

Do not wait if you think a raccoon is located in your attic or crawlspace.  It may find its way into your home.  Do not capture and relocate a raccoon.  Although the animal may not be noticeably unhealthy, it may spread a disease to other animals, and it is against South Carolina law.
